The verdict

Across seven outlets, the Poco X8 Pro Max is a strong pick for people who want long battery life, a very bright screen and fast gaming. Reviewers were consistently critical of its HyperOS bloatware and ads, its weak ultrawide camera and its bulky body. Evidence on value is thin, so treat price judgements as early.

Best for: Gamers and heavy users who put battery life, screen brightness and speed ahead of camera and software polish.
Skip it if: You want a clean, ad-free interface, a compact phone, or a camera that is consistent in every condition.

In detail

Camera: 7.3/10

Outlets agree the 50MP main camera is good in daylight and the 8MP ultrawide is the weak link. TechPP and Trusted Reviews found solid daylight detail, and Beebom praised the dynamic range, though Beebom also saw the ultrawide smudge and fail at night. Low light split opinion: TechRadar and FoneArena found it good, while Smartprix Bytes and Trusted Reviews found it weak. Colour is also disputed: TechPP and MySmartPrice Gear saw oversaturated tones, while TechRadar found photos duller. TechRadar noted stable 4K video at 60fps but no slow-motion. NotebookCheck was the harshest, citing no optical zoom and over-sharpened selfies.

Battery life: 9.8/10

Battery life is the clearest strength. TechRadar, Trusted Reviews, TechPP, Beebom and Smartprix Bytes all reported about two days of heavy use, and TechRadar and TechPP said careful or light users could reach three. NotebookCheck measured very long runtimes: 35.2 hours idle, 32 hours of video and 23.2 hours on WiFi. FoneArena logged more than seven hours of screen-on time with heavy 5G use at 120Hz over a day. MySmartPrice Gear’s PCMark run lasted 22 hours 40 minutes, a strong but more modest result. Differences come mostly from test methods.

Performance: 9.1/10

Nearly every outlet found the Dimensity 9500s very fast. Trusted Reviews reported strong Geekbench results and said it maxes out demanding games. MySmartPrice Gear and TechPP saw smooth high-end gaming, and TechRadar had no problems across three weeks of intensive use. Sustained load is where views differ. Beebom and MySmartPrice Gear praised thermals, with Beebom measuring under 38°C after two hours of gaming. NotebookCheck reported significant throttling, and FoneArena saw the phone heat quickly in a stress test. Trusted Reviews recorded 57% stability in that same kind of test. Expect excellent everyday speed, with some doubt over long heavy sessions.

Display: 9.3/10

Reviewers agree the screen is very bright, vibrant and smooth. Beebom measured 3,170 nits peak in HDR and NotebookCheck measured 3,582, and Trusted Reviews, FoneArena, TechRadar and Smartprix Bytes cited a 3,500-nit peak with excellent outdoor visibility. Beebom also found it flicker-free with good colour balance. MySmartPrice Gear is the outlier, measuring only 1,480 nits and noting slightly oversaturated colours. Trusted Reviews and Smartprix Bytes pointed to the refresh rate: it is not truly adaptive below 120Hz, and Smartprix saw it drop to 60-90Hz in some apps.

Software: 5.6/10

This is the weakest area. Trusted Reviews, Smartprix Bytes, MySmartPrice Gear, NotebookCheck, TechRadar, TechPP and Beebom all criticised HyperOS 3 for pre-installed third-party apps, and several mentioned ads and frequent notifications. Beebom called the bloatware excessive and noticed UI stutters, which Smartprix Bytes also reported. TechRadar said manual deletion is needed to get a basic interface. Trusted Reviews was the mildest: it noted the apps can be removed and that a broad set of on-device AI features partly makes up for it. Smartprix Bytes noted the promise of four Android updates and six years of security patches.

Charging: 8.5/10

Outlets confirm 100W wired charging and 27W reverse charging, which TechPP, FoneArena and Smartprix Bytes treated as a useful extra. NotebookCheck noted there is no wireless charging. Measured full-charge times varied: TechRadar saw about 45 minutes, Smartprix Bytes about 1 hour 10 minutes, and Beebom and TechPP about 1 hour 30 minutes. FoneArena reported 50% in under 30 minutes and a full charge in just over an hour. Verdicts range from decent to very good. NotebookCheck also measured slow file copying over the USB 2.0 port.

Design & build: 8.1/10

Reviewers agree on durability: IP68/IP69K protection, Gorilla Glass 7i and a fingerprint-resistant fiberglass back, as FoneArena, MySmartPrice Gear and Smartprix Bytes noted. They also agree the phone is large and heavy, at about 218-220g, and hard to use one-handed. Appeal differs. Beebom and FoneArena called it premium and well balanced, while TechPP found it plain, TechRadar found the camera LED ring rarely useful, and NotebookCheck said it wobbles considerably on a table. Choose it for toughness, not looks or portability.

Value: 8.1/10

Evidence on value is thin, with only two outlets giving a verdict, so this is an early reading. TechPP called the price it quoted of Rs 42,999-46,999 competitive for flagship-level performance and battery life, but not a bargain, and MySmartPrice Gear called it a strong proposition for gaming and battery priorities. The reviews we read don’t say which market that rupee price is for. FoneArena listed prices for 12GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB versions without a verdict. No outlet compared it with rivals, so check current local pricing.

How we put this together

We read the reviews and articles listed above and weigh each by how much it should count: in-depth, hands-on testing with measurements counts most; launch news and press-release rewrites count least; sponsored content is penalised. Category scores are our trust-weighted summary of what those sources found, set to the same 10-point scale reviewers use; the reviewers’ own scores, where published, are listed above. This page was compiled with AI assistance and checked against the source notes. All findings belong to the outlets credited above; follow the links to read their full reviews. How we score.
