In detail

Camera: 7.1/10

Most outlets say the 50MP main camera with OIS does well in good light. FoneArena, Smartprix Bytes, MySmartPrice Gear and Engadget all praise its daylight detail and colour. The 5MP ultrawide, 2MP macro and 1080p video limit are widely called weak. Low light divides reviewers. 91mobiles tested it and was impressed by balanced exposure and little noise. Engadget and Digit found it softer, noisier or washed out, and Tom’s Guide saw underexposed scenes. Tom’s Guide was the harshest, citing a sluggish shutter and washed-out outdoor colours. Digit liked the portrait separation, while Android Police found the camera app slow to open.

Battery life: 6.6/10

Real-world endurance is described as adequate to good, but standard tests are less kind. Tom’s Guide measured 7 hours 52 minutes in its drain test, well under its 10-hour phone average. 91mobiles logged just under 10 hours in PCMark, among the lowest in its class, and Digit got about 11 hours 48 minutes, calling it respectable but below expectations. Engadget’s video test was strong, though five hours short of the Pixel 9a. Android Police, Android Central and 9to5Google are more glowing, but they rely on impressions rather than measurements. Smartprix Bytes still had some charge left by evening.

Performance: 4.7/10

This is the A17 5G’s weakest area. Android Authority found it trailing Motorola budget phones in benchmarks, with menu stutter, freezing apps and very slow Pokémon Go loading. 9to5Google called it very poor, with constant lag. Tom’s Guide noticed camera app lag, and MySmartPrice Gear found BGMI limited to 30fps at lowest settings. Engadget said updates helped but the phone still is not fully responsive. Digit, Android Police and 91mobiles were milder, citing improved benchmarks over the A16, stable throttling and smooth light gaming. Android Police and Android Central both flagged 4GB of RAM as too little.

Display: 7.4/10

Outlets agree the 6.7-inch Super AMOLED is vibrant and sharp, with deep blacks and smooth 90Hz motion. Android Police called it fantastic for the price. Brightness divides them. Digit measured 1,250 nits, and FoneArena and MySmartPrice Gear found sunlight use comfortable. Tom’s Guide measured 657 nits, the dimmest screen it tested this year, and called strong sunlight impossible. Android Authority, Smartprix Bytes and Android Central also warned about direct sun. Android Authority additionally saw the screen scratch easily in a backpack. Engadget noted 90Hz rather than 120Hz as a minor gap.

Software: 9.0/10

Every outlet that covers software mentions Samsung’s promise of six years of OS and security updates. Those that judged it, including 91mobiles, MySmartPrice Gear and Tom’s Guide, called it rare or a major advantage at this price. 91mobiles said it ships with One UI 7 on Android 15 and 49 preinstalled apps, which it considered clean for One UI. MySmartPrice Gear noted fewer spammy notifications and mentioned Gemini Live and Circle to Search. Most other outlets only list the specs, and none reported software bugs. Our evidence here rests mostly on the update promise rather than long-term testing.

Charging: 6.2/10

Outlets agree 25W wired charging is adequate and there is no wireless charging. Measured results are middling. Tom’s Guide recorded 56% in 30 minutes, FoneArena a full charge in about 1.5 hours, Smartprix Bytes around 1 hour 20 minutes, and MySmartPrice Gear 1 hour 30 minutes. Digit called its 95-minute result slow against rivals offering 45-67W. 9to5Google said the phone charges quickly but gave no figures. Reviews disagree on the box contents: Smartprix Bytes says a charger is included, while Android Central says it is sold separately. Check the listing for your market.

Design & build: 7.5/10

Outlets agree the A17 5G is slimmer and lighter than the A16, with Victus glass and IP54. Digit and Engadget found the body premium and well made, and Engadget liked the microSD slot. Android Police valued the Victus glass at this price. 9to5Google found it plain all-plastic, with poor fingerprint button feedback. Android Authority disliked the smudgy gloss finish and said IP54 is not enough for pool use. 91mobiles and Android Central criticised the dated notch and thick bezels, and Android Central also noted there is no headphone jack.

Value: 7.6/10

Outlets mostly see the A17 5G as inexpensive, and Android Central says it is often discounted. Tom’s Guide quotes $199, under half the Pixel 10a’s price, though it says sluggish performance and a weak camera are significant compromises. Prices vary by market. Android Police calls it excellent value at about $200, and prefers it to the Moto G Play for most buyers. Smartprix Bytes is mildly positive. 9to5Google disagrees, saying poor performance makes it unpleasant to use and hard to recommend. Fewer outlets discuss value, so this section rests on thinner evidence.

How we put this together

We read the reviews and articles listed above and weigh each by how much it should count: in-depth, hands-on testing with measurements counts most; launch news and press-release rewrites count least; sponsored content is penalised. Category scores are our trust-weighted summary of what those sources found, set to the same 10-point scale reviewers use; the reviewers’ own scores, where published, are listed above. This page was compiled with AI assistance and checked against the source notes. All findings belong to the outlets credited above; follow the links to read their full reviews. How we score.
